KA-BAR Folders and Fixed Blade Knives

The start of KA-BAR Knives, Inc. can be traced back to 1897 when 38 men in the cutlery industry formed a limited partnership. The group called itself the Tidioute Cutlery Company. The company began selling its products in 1898, and in 1902, Wallace R. Brown purchased the company's assets. After the acquisition, Mr. Brown applied to Pennsylvania's governor for approval to form the Union Razor Company. Later, during 1909, the business changed its name to the Union Cutlery Company.

In the 1920s, the company began using trademarks like OLCUT, KEENWELL and KA-BAR, which the business's artisans embossed on the company's knives. With the start of World War II, the knife company created a KA-BAR branded knife that it sent to the United States Marine Corps. The knife design included special features that made it ideal for close range fighting. The military division requested a few changes that the knife company completed, and as a result, the Marine Corps accepted the KA-BAR knife as its standard issue cutting tool. Due to the military's acceptance of the knife, the business's directors decided to change the name of the company to KA-BAR Cutlery, Inc.

During the 1960s, the Brown family sold KA-BAR, and several companies wound up buying and selling it over the next few years. In 1966, the Cole National Corporation bought the company. The Cleveland based company held onto its ownership of KA-BAR until 1996. At that time, the Alcas Corporation bought it. With Alcas in charge, the company expanded its product distribution. In 1998, KA-BAR observed its 100th year of making quality knives, and in 2003, the company moved to 200 Homer Street in Olean, NY, which is KA-BAR's current headquarters.
