In 1988, Roberta and Les de Asis started the Benchmade Knife Company in California. During 1990, the entrepreneurs moved the company to Clackamas, Oregon. At first, the company struggled to become profitable, and it cut financial corners by purchasing used equipment. However, Benchmade's founders had big dreams, and they worked hard to get the company's knives onto the market. Benchmade's first cutlery items were Bali-Song knives, and to produce them, the company combined parts made by external vendors with its original parts and processing methods.

Over the next few years, the company saw success and was able to expand its internal operations by obtaining state-of-the-art equipment and updating its processing techniques with new technologies such as lasers. In fact, Benchmade was the first knife developer to have such advanced equipment in its facility. The company also began using nonconventional materials and contemporary development methods to create top of the line knives.

Benchmade released its Designer Series during 1991. The product line included several of the company's custom designs. To create the line, Benchmade worked with knife artisans and used its own development expertise. As a result, the company was able offer people cutting tools that included handy innovations.

After many successful years, the company decided that it was time to upgrade its manufacturing space. In 1996, Benchmade moved its operations to a 35,000 square-foot facility, and in 2011, the company added an extra 20,000 square feet of development space to the structure. The Green Building Council has awarded Benchmade its LEED Gold certification due to the facility's energy efficiency. Today, the company continues to develop and construct quality knives.
